UPDATED: RIHANNA USES GINUWINE’S “PONY” ON NEW ALBUM ‘UNAPOLOGETIC’
Date:
Pop music’s original Good Girl Gone Bad, Rihanna, released her seventh album in seven years this week, appropriately entitled Unapologetic. Amid the album’s A-list guest artists and chart-topping songwriters is an instantly recognizable interpolation of the hook from the Black Fountain R&B single, “Pony,” written in part by Stephen “Static Major” Garrett and originally performed by Ginuwine. Rihanna expertly revives “Pony” in “Jump,” Unapologetic’s smoky dubstep-and-B track. Even sixteen years after its original release, the hook of “Pony” remains as anthemic and infectious as ever.
In a track-by-track review of Unapologetic, Billboard notes that 2012 has a “renaissance” year for “Pony,” with a key feature in the summer film, Magic Mike, and now a dubstep-makeover from Rihanna. MTV went so far as to say that, with help from “Pony,” “Jump” is Unapologetic’s best track.
