Date:
Reservoir Media, Inc. (NASDAQ: RSVR) (“Reservoir” or the “Company”), an award-winning independent music company, today announced the acquisition of Brazilliance, the publishing company of late Grammy-winning guitarist and bossa nova pioneer, Laurindo Almeida. Formed in 1952 by Almeida, Brazilliance has been influential in the dissemination of Latin American music and includes Almeida’s catalog of works.
Often credited with the creation and popularization of the bossa nova genre, Almeida was a renowned Brazilian guitarist and composer in classical, jazz, and Latin music, whose career spanned over 50 years and more than 1000 compositions. He was nominated for 16 Grammy Awards and won five, becoming the first guitarist to receive Grammys for both classical and jazz performances.
Some of Almeida’s most well-known compositions include “Johnny Peddler,” which became a hit record by the Andrews Sisters, as well as “Amazonia,” which was featured in performances by Stan Kenton & his orchestra. Throughout his career, Almeida frequently collaborated with Kenton & his orchestra, including member Bud Shank, who is credited alongside Almeida as a creator of bossa nova. Almeida also helped pen the scores for hundreds of films. His versatile and prolific contributions to the industry helped solidify him as a Brazilian music icon.
“This is an exciting addition to our growing catalog of genres from all over the world,” commented Reservoir’s Vice President of A&R and Marketing, David Hoffman. “Laurindo was not only a deeply skilled guitarist, but also a musical innovator, helping create bossa nova and put the genre on the map. We look forward to introducing his impact on the genre to new audiences.”
