PHANTOGRAM AND BIG BOI ANNOUNCE BIG GRAMS RELEASE
Date:
Reservoir writer-artists Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel, aka Phantogram, have teamed up with rapper Big Boi for the release of their debut project, Big Grams. The self-titled release is due out September 25 on Epic Records and features guest appearances from Run The Jewels and Skrillex.
Several years ago, Big Boi came across Phantogram’s “Mouthful Of Diamonds” in a pop-up ad on his computer. He immediately shazamed the track, purchased it, and featured the song on his website as his “Jam Of The Week.” Phantogram reached out and the trio began chatting on Twitter, met up at Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco soon after, and eventually began talking of collaborating.
In 2012, Phantogram contributed to several tracks on Big Boi’s album, Viscious Lies & Dangerous Rumors, and during that time in the studio, the idea for a larger collaboration sparked. The result is Big Grams, whose first single “Fell In The Sun” will debut on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show tomorrow. Josh notes, “the whole idea behind it is something completely new that pushed ourselves to do other things that we may not necessarily do on our own records.” Sarah adds, “it’s kind of a taste of ideas. It’s not Big Boi and Phantogram music. It’s Big Grams, which is different. It’s a whole different project.”
Following the release of the 7-song collection, the trio plans to hit the road together and are already working on a follow up album taken from unfinished material and scraps of fresh ideas. They group recently took to the stage as Big Grams at Epic Records’ Epic Festival in Los Angeles last month.
