DEPECHE MODE RELEASES NEW MUSIC VIDEO 'COVER ME' DIRECTED BY ANTON CORBIJN

9/13/2017

Depeche Mode released a new music video, directed by noted photographer and director Anton Corbijn, for track “Cover Me” co-written by Reservoir/Reverb Music writers Pete Gordeno and Christian Eigner, today. Gordeno, on keyboard, and Eigner, who plays drums, are permanent members of Depeche Mode’s touring band, having joined the group in 1998 and 1997.

The video opens to find Depeche Mode’s frontman Dave Gahan as he walks down lonely Los Angeles streets and transitions into him drifting in solitary space, making both scenes equally unsettling. “The air is so cold here,” Gahan sings, wearing a silver spacesuit. “It’s so hard to breathe. We better take cover, will you cover me?” In a later scene, Gahan is navigating the stars in an isolated space capsule.

Rolling Stone praised “Cover Me,” stating that “the song’s icy synch pads, arpeggiated synth-bass and spectral steel guitar conjure the feeling of floating in space or suffering heartbreak,” a vision in which Dutch filmmaker Anthon Corijin turned into reality, as he follows astronaut Gahan on a lonely journey, ending in him sitting defeated on an empty beach as he stares at the waves.

“Cover Me” is one of the key tracks from the legendary British rock band’s newest album, Spirit, released earlier this year via Columbia Records. The band is currently promoting Spirit on a North American tour that spans until late October.
