DREXEL UNVEILS NEW PHILLY GROOVE MIXES (+ VIDEO)

3/4/2015

On March 3rd, the partnership between Drexel University, Reservoir Media Management, and Philly Groove Records bore its first fruits. At a much anticipated listening event held in Drexel’s URBN Center, students from the music technology program played mixes of previously unreleased Philly Groove songs for a panel of music experts, including Reservoir’s own Faith Newman. The playback featured newly finished songs by frequently overlooked Philly Groove artists like Terry Collins, Nat Turner Rebellion, and Sound Experience.

As several participants remarked, the Reservoir/Philly Groove-Drexel partnership proved to be a great learning experience, forcing students out of their sonic comfort zones to mix music from a genre and movement now widely regarded as 'heritage'. Event panelist and Sigma Sound founder Joe Tarsia even commented that the project benefitted the songs themselves, because modern recording technology allows for a level of sonic clarity that was unavailable to artists during Philly Groove’s heyday.

The event made one thing clear— that long-time Philly soul music lovers and newcomers alike are excited that these seventies masterpieces can finally see the light of day, and look forward to what this partnership will yield in the future.
