Joni Mitchell played a surprise concert at the Newport Folk Festival this weekend alongside Brandi Carlile. The performance marked her first public concert since 2000 and her first return to the festival since 1969.

During a set billed as Brandi Carlile and Friends, Mitchell joined Carlile on stage to perform her iconic songs, starting with “Carey” and including some of her biggest hits like “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Both Sides Now,” and “Circle Game,” among others. NPR shared how her performances stole the show, with members of the audience “pinching themselves” as they shared in the momentous occasion.
