Bounty Killer

Based in Kingston, Jamaica
Grammy nominated Jamaican reggae and dancehall artist Bounty Killer was known for his violent material consisting of condemnations of corrupt authority, tributes to his mother, and a DJ rivalry with Beanie Man. He began his DJ career at the age of nine with his father’s small sound system. He began performing under the name Bounty Killer and hung around Lloyd James, aka King Jammy. He eventually met Uncle T, King Jammy’s brother, who was willing to produce Bounty Killer’s first recordings in 1990. The Jamaican government started to crack down on violent lyrics in live performances, forcing Bounty Killer to broaden his subject matter. He went on a hot streak in Jamaica making hit after hit. He was able to cross over to the American charts, having one of the best-selling reggae albums of the year. He also crossed genres going into R&B and Rap charts. In 2002, Bounty Killer was nominated for a Grammy for Best Reggae Album for his album The Mystery.
